Bergen County Players Present

Woody Allen’s Classic Comedy “Play It Again, Sam”

Oradell, NJ.  December 23, 2002.

Is divorce ever funny?  Are the pitfalls of starting over in a new relationship a cause for laughter?  The answer is a resounding “Yes!” – if the story is being told by America’s comic master of urban angst, Woody Allen.  Audiences can discover this for themselves as the Bergen County Players of Oradell present Allen’s hit comedy, Play It Again, Sam.  The show opens Saturday, January 11 and plays weekends through February 1.

One of his earliest successes, playwright/filmmaker Woody Allen’s Play It Again, Sam is a wildly funny look at dating and relationships.  It is the story of nebbish Allan Felix (a Woody Allen stand-in) and his humorously pathetic attempts to re-connect with women after his divorce.  With the ghost of Humphrey Bogart as his spiritual guide to women and romance, Allan jumps back into the dating pool, only to find himself attracted to the wife of his best friend.

According to the show’s director, Dottie Fischer of Tenafly, “Play It Again, Sam is the perfect antidote to the post-holiday blues.  It’s a wonderful mix of snappy one-liners, fantasy, farcical situations and comic business.”  A Players veteran and frequent director/choreographer, Ms. Fischer adds, “Rehearsals have been a blast.  We laugh all the time.”

Playing the lead role of Allan Felix (Woody Allen’s alter-ego) is Players newcomer D. Scott Adams of River Vale, who recently returned home to New Jersey after an extended trip through the Far East.  Prior to that, he lived in Los Angeles, where he studied at the Beverly Hills Playhouse and performed on stage and television.  Allen’s best friend Dick Christie, the businessman with a telephone seemingly implanted in his ear, is played by Roy Mossi of Maywood, who has appeared in numerous BCP productions.  Dick’s wife Linda Christie, Allan’s kindred spirit who shares many of his neuroses, is played by Teresa Simpson of Upper Saddle River.  Ms. Simpson is also a regular on the BCP stage, most recently seen in last season’s Parallel Lives.

Among the show’s comic highlights are the fantasy appearances of Humphrey Bogart as he teaches Allan how to deal with “dames.”  Playing “Bogie” is Midland Park resident David Arts.  David has appeared at BCP and Bergen Community College.  A skilled musical comedy performer with an extensive resume of roles at BCP and elsewhere, Joanne Moldt of Cresskill doesn’t get to sing or dance here, but her comedic skills will be in evidence as she plays Allan’s acerbic ex-wife, Nancy.

Playing all the other women in Allan’s life (his “dates from hell,” as they are humorously called) are Staci Beth Block (Hackensack), Rosella DeVincenzo (Oradell), Laurin Pecoraro (Saddle Brook), Jessica Mumma (New Milford), and Marie Letarte Mueller (Teaneck).
